The Art of the Brick has found a temporary home in a former department store of over 4,500 m2 in the Amsterdam Kalverpassage, the attractive shopping destination between the Heiligeweg and the Kalverstraat.
The Kalverpassage is the attractive passageway linking the Heiligeweg and the Kalverstraat in Amsterdam. What used to be the Kalvertoren shopping centre is now a through road and an important shopping destination. The centre has entrances from Kalverstraat, Heiligeweg and the Singel canal. The Kalverpassage also has its own multi-storey car park and a bicycle park.
The Kalverpassage, a real art passage!
The Kalverpassage not only has a collection of beautiful shops and restaurants, the works of art in the passage are also impressive.
Visit this page to read about the LED artwork above our entrance that shows a different color combination every minute. Or read about the distorted 1953 Volkswagen Beetle, or about the digital clock, whose numbers are manually changed by actors every minute, just like the large clock in the departure hall of Schiphol. You can’t believe your eyes!

A special past
The location has a rich history: in the Middle Ages it was the Convent of the Poor Clares, and it was then used as a prison in the 18th and 19th centuries. At the time Amsterdammers called it the “Rasphuis” (grating house), because the prisoners had to grate wood for making dyes. The old entrance gate in Heiligeweg is a reminder of those times. In 1892 the building was torn down to make way for the Heiligeweg baths. (Source: Wikipedia)
