In a recent press release, LEGO states that a brick made from PET plastic from discarded bottles is the first brick to meet the company’s strict quality and safety requirements. The material is purchased from suppliers that use processes approved by the US Food & Drug Administration and the European Food Safety Authority.

A one-litre plastic PET bottle provides enough raw material for 10 LEGO bricks measuring 2 x 4.

It is expected to be some time before bricks made from recycled material are for sale. The LEGO Group will continue to test and develop the PET formula and decide whether to move into the pilot production phase, which is expected to take at least a year. One of the factors the company is testing is how the material can be coloured.
